Hi, I'm Gemma.

I'm a Scottish writer and researcher obsessed with how the world works.

I write about science, tech and the broad cultural issues surrounding their advancements. My book ‘Smoke & Mirrors: How Hype Obscures the Future and How to See Past It’ is on the role hype plays in dictating and derailing crucial progress in science and tech (and how to empower yourself against it).

I’m a PhD researcher at the University of Edinburgh focusing on the ethics and political economy of corporate futurism. I’m also a CIRCE Fellow - my research is exploring the creative industries’ role in informing/challenging the political imagination of the New Space sector. Finally, I’m a Research Associate at the University of Glasgow based in the Digital Society & Economy group, where I work across various technology and society research projects.

I co-host the Radical Science podcast, where we discuss the role science plays in society with a variety of guests across disciplines, and I’m a deep tech advisor - for governments, institutions and other organisations working in those spaces.

Let's chat.
