Smoke & Mirrors:

How Hype Obscures the Future and How to See Past It

I’m delighted to announce that my book will be published in 2020 by Constable Robinson, the quirky non-fiction imprint of Little, Brown.

SMOKE & MIRRORS: HOW HYPE OBSCURES THE FUTURE AND HOW TO SEE PAST IT will provide an insightful guide to the twenty-first century and beyond that will be unique in picking apart the idealistic hype around clickbait headlines to delve deeply into all the relevant social and technological issues. The focus will be on getting to the bottom of what is really going on, and what might happen, rather than allowing ourselves to be swept up in hype and over-excited thought-pieces that idealise the future.

I’m so excited to be writing about such an important topic, which was born from a combination of frustration at misleading articles and overzealous start-up pitches and my lifelong love and appreciation of science and technology. It’s possible to be enthusiastic and optimistic about the future, without buying into hype and wishful thinking. My hope is that this book will provide a different way of thinking about progress, for those who want to better understand the broader picture without losing sight of what makes science so extraordinary and exciting.
