Hi, I'm Gemma.
I'm a Scottish writer, researcher and academic exploring the political economy of science and technology, particularly how emerging deep tech fields like quantum, biotech, green tech and space are shaped by economic, institutional, and cultural forces.
I'm a Lecturer in Technology and Innovation Management at the University of Glasgow, where I am co-Director of the forthcoming Deep Tech Innovation Centre (launching 2026) and co-lead the Social Studies of Deep Tech research group. My research looks at how scientific knowledge becomes material in the real world through products, policies and practices, and how innovation systems can be designed to support equity, accountability and the public good. I’m especially interested in alternative ‘lab to market’ models in deep tech, from open IP structures and cooperative/commons business models, to citizen-designed science infrastructure and social finance instruments. My PhD (Sociology) examined the promises, product and practices of corporate futurism.
I came into academia after a decade in industry as a journalist, consultant and author - experience that continues to shape how I think about research, communication and collaboration. I’ve advised governments, startups, funders and policymakers, and worked with organisations such as the European Commission, Innovate UK, Backed VC and others.
I wrote Smoke & Mirrors: How Hype Obscures the Future and How to See Past It, co-host the Radical Science podcast, and write about science, tech and the cultural dynamics surrounding both, with bylines in The Guardian, WIRED, Forbes, BBC and more.
Always keen to chat – about ideas, projects, possibilities.
Speaking
I speak Internationally - from keynotes and interviews to panels and moderation - on science, tech and culture.
Writing
I write about science, technology, political economy, entrepreneurship and culture for various publications around the globe.
